Printable directions Helen Stacey graduated from the South Australian School of Art in 1968. Since 1988, after five years as Art Senior at Glossop High School, she commenced work as an artist with a comprehensive exhibition program in four states and overseas. Since 1987 she has held over twenty solo exhibitions in four states and over fifty group shows. She has undertaken projects for Country Arts South Australia (CASA) as Acting Arts Officer for the then Riverland Cultural Trust, coordinator of the 1988 Riverland Multicultural Festival and co-consultant for a South Australian-Malaysian exhibition exchange in 2000-2001. In 1990 she held a solo exhibition at the National Library of China, Beijing at the invitation of the then Ambassador to China. In 1991 she established a studio gallery in Strathalbyn. As a result of attending a conference for Eastern European artists in Poland in 1993 she was invited to participate in a cultural program in Gatchina, Russia, in 1993. She has curated numerous exhibitions including Journey & Discovery in London 1997 at Mall Galleries, Galeri Petronas in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 1997 and Hill-Smith Fine Art, Adelaide, 1997. In 1999 and 2000 she coordinated the Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibitions. Since 1997 she has been a curator and consultant for various visual art exchange projects between Malaysia and Australia, including acting as co-consultant for the 2000 Telstra Adelaide Festival of Arts exhibition Di Antara Dua Pedalaman - Between Remote Regions, and a chairperson for Woven Dreams from the Rainforest forum, Flinders University Gallery, 2001. In July 2007 the solo exhibition Negotiating Boundaries was shown at the Royal South Australian Society of Arts. In 2008-09 this exhibition will tour to regional galleries in South Australia. In 1997 she graduated as Master of Visual Arts (MVA) from the University of South Australia and in 2004 completed an MVA by research on visual art exchange between Malaysia and Australia at the same university. Her studio work mostly revolves around representations of the land and she frequently explores its layered meanings of myth, symbol and issues of reconciliation. She expresses ideas in a variety of mediums, including painting, photography, assemblage, installation, sculpture and textiles. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections in Australia and overseas, including Artbank in Sydney, Country Arts South Australia, The Adelaide Childrens' Hospital, the Australian High Commission China and the Ipoh State Art Gallery collection in Malaysia.
